Why Regular Maintenance Matters
FDM 3D printers rely on precise mechanical movement and consistent material flow. Over time, dust, filament residue, and wear on moving parts can lead to failed prints, Z-banding, and poor first layers. A simple maintenance routine — using the right accessories — can dramatically improve your print success rate and extend the life of your printer.
Bed Adhesion: The Foundation of Every Print
The first layer is critical. If your print does not stick to the build plate, everything that follows is wasted time and filament. Warping and corner lifting are common problems, especially with materials like ABS and PETG.
A dedicated bed adhesive stick, such as the Proevove PVP bed adhesive, creates a thin, even layer that improves grip without leaving a messy residue. Unlike hairspray or glue mixtures, a formulated adhesive stick is non-toxic, washable with water, and works across PLA, ABS, PETG, TPU, and more.
- Clean the build plate with isopropyl alcohol before applying adhesive.
- Apply a thin, even coat — a light swipe is usually enough.
- Reapply when prints start lifting or after several print sessions.
- Wash off with water when switching between materials or deep cleaning.
Z-Axis Lead Screw Lubrication
The Z-axis lead screw carries the weight of your entire print bed and hotend assembly. Without proper lubrication, you may notice Z-banding — visible horizontal ridges on your prints caused by inconsistent layer heights.
Proevove lead screw lubricant is a PTFE-based grease designed specifically for trapezoidal Z-axis screws. It reduces friction, smooths movement, and protects screw threads and brass or POM nuts from wear. The 10ml syringe applicator makes it easy to apply precisely without over-greasing.
- Apply grease to the lead screw every 2–3 months, or when you notice rough Z movement.
- Use only on lead screws — not on linear rods or rails.
- Run the Z-axis up and down a few times after applying to distribute the grease evenly.
- Wipe away excess grease to prevent dust buildup.
Hotend Care and Upgrades
Your hotend is where filament melts and extrudes. A worn or clogged nozzle leads to under-extrusion, stringing, and failed prints. For users printing abrasive filaments like carbon fibre or glow-in-the-dark PLA, a standard brass nozzle wears quickly.
Upgrading to a hardened steel hotend assembly gives you durability and high flow for demanding prints. The Proevove 0.6mm hardened steel hotend for Bambu Lab A1 and A1 Mini includes a finned aluminium heatsink to prevent heat creep during long sessions, plus a detachable nozzle for easy maintenance.
- Clean the nozzle regularly with a cold pull or brass brush when changing filaments.
- Replace nozzles when you notice inconsistent extrusion or visible wear.
- Use hardened steel nozzles for abrasive filaments to avoid rapid wear.
- Allow the hotend to cool fully before swapping nozzles or assemblies.
Build a Simple Maintenance Schedule
You do not need to overhaul your printer every week. A light routine keeps things reliable without eating into your printing time.
- Before each print: Check bed cleanliness and apply adhesive if needed.
- Weekly: Inspect belts, clean the build plate, and check for loose screws.
- Monthly: Lubricate the Z-axis lead screw and clean the nozzle.
- As needed: Replace worn nozzles or upgrade hotends for new filament types.
